ACT JAM TO MOOSEHEADS
Share
YOU GOT TO LOVE IT
We bloody love this time of year—Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's... and then there’s the motherfucking ACT JAM. It's not just a jam, it’s a full-blown cultural event for BMX heads. Pure chaos, sweaty mayhem, and some of the wildest riding you'll ever see.
4:32am Friday — Airport Bound
Running on no sleep, I’m headed to Canberra on a dumb-early flight, bags packed and booked solid to film this madhouse. This year’s media squad is heavy: Cam Pianta as head of audience filming, me out here fisheye swooping like a madman, a live stream running, and a full crew of filmers buzzing around. As my mate Yonny Shakerfield would say, "It's a bloody media frenzy." Of course, those "Did I forget anything?" thoughts start creeping in. Cameras? Check. Cards? Check. Batteries? Yep. Enough cash for a cheeky dice game if some young bloods wanna throw hands? You bet. Bit sad though—Yonny's sitting this one out. He reckons you need a passport to go to Canberra. I tried telling him otherwise, but he was firm. Man’s a character. (Also, probably for the best. Last time he was here, he started an incident at Belco... it's in the past

2:41pm Friday — We Be Workin'
We’re off and racing. One reel down, three to go. This ain’t no chill sesh—it's a fast-paced, sweaty-ass worksite. Jason Watts is barking orders, Dovey's floating around, confused from the night before, and the ramps are getting smashed together by a stacked crew. I'm darting around like a headless chook, filming everything. Zac Miner pulled up and said I smell good (cheers, legend), Boyd Hilder's here telling Jason to get the ramps done 'cause he’s got something world-first in the tank. It’s HOT. Lucky I brought the bucket hat. Jimmah rocks up, Bundy in hand: "That Chanel."
4:00pm Friday — The Jam Kicks Off
Boyd Hilder, certified people’s champ. Termite’s painted up like a juggalo, and honestly, I can't take the lens off him. Dude's just fascinating. Someone sign him up for a full part, ASAP. Pete fuckin' Mayer? Insane. Been filming him since Hard Yards, and he never disappoints. Absolute savage.
Izzack Berryman just did the most cooked bike flip transfer. I’m standing there speechless. BMX is unreal. This whole thing? It’s blowing my brain apart.
Midnight Friday — Mooseheads Mayhem
After scrambling to deliver a few edits for Backbone, we hit the only place you really should be—Mooseheads. If you know, you know. Dovey did a flip, the worm was going off, Claw showed up, Boyd's on fire, Jason Watts was there, and I was rapidly getting way too loose. Had a sick yarn with Dylan Lewis and his missus, such good energy. Dovey? Cooked. First night fever hit HARD. I had to remind myself there’s two more days of this. But... fuck it. It’s ACT JAM.
OH, let’s rewind. I had a walkie talkie all day like it was my big TV break. I radioed for a chocolate milk from the media tent like some big-time boss. Got a weird silence back, and no choccy milk.
4am Saturday — Hotel Vibes
Found Jimmah and his van after an epic wander, then cruised back to the hotel with my thoughts spinning. BMX is MAHD. Let’s keep this shit going.
Day 2 — The Dovey Show
Woke up feeling like I got hit by a train, but no time to whinge. The editing suite was set up, the camera reloaded, and back to the battlefield.
Kicked off with a 20-minute warm-up session, then BOOM, box jump hammers all arvo. Double flips, wild sends. And here I go... Dovey appreciation mode. Man’s a freak. His bike control is next level. Flipping quarters like he’s weightless. Jumping over 69 kegs. Hanging upside down mid-flip for what feels like 7 seconds. Heel clickers. Weird little tweak flips. It’s nuts. I’m calling it: Dovey is my favourite rider ever. Shane Ellis? Took the W for high air. Mad dog.
Day 3 — Big Fuck-Off Jump Day
Here we are. Thousands of dollars on the line, tension high, crowd feral.
Termite’s sending 450s over the shark fin. R-Willy’s throwing cash rolls. Toohey lands a front bike flip over the 30-footer. Jimmah's launching. THEN... a double flip train from R-Willy, Dovey, Toohey, and Buckworth. This is cooked. The energy is off its head. I’m standing on top of the 30-footer while Punni’s half-blind and yelling shit as riders flip over him.
Every year, ACT JAM makes you feel more alive than ever. BMX is more than riding, it’s family. It’s pure passion, chaos, and connection. And yeah, I got so buzzed I forgot half of it... But don’t worry. Highlights edit coming soon.
